How to Choose the Right Riding Helmet
Published 30 September 2025 • 4 min read
Your helmet is your most important piece of riding equipment. Here’s how to pick one that protects and lasts.
Certification Matters
Look for current safety certifications (e.g., ASTM/SEI in the US, VG1 or PAS 015 in the UK). Avoid used helmets—you can’t verify their impact history.
Fit is Everything
The helmet should be snug without pressure points and sit level on your head. The harness should form a “V” under your ears and fasten securely.
Ventilation and Style
Choose ventilation that matches your climate and discipline. More vents improve airflow but ensure they don’t compromise certification.
Care and Replacement
Store away from heat, clean with mild soap, and replace after any impact or every 3–5 years, whichever comes first.
