Great riding begins with great habits. Whether you’re preparing for your first lesson or refreshing fundamentals, here are the essentials.

1) Wear Certified Gear

Use a properly fitted, certified helmet (ASTM/SEI or equivalent). Boots should have a small heel to prevent your foot from slipping through the stirrup.

2) Check Tack Every Time

Before mounting, check the girth/cinch, stirrup leathers, and bridle. Recheck the girth after a short walk or warm-up.

3) Mind the Horse’s Space

Approach calmly at the shoulder, avoid sudden movements behind the horse, and never wrap lead ropes around your hand.

4) Mount and Dismount Safely

Use a mounting block when available, keep reins gathered but soft, and ask your instructor to spot you until confident.

5) Communicate Clearly

Inside the arena, call out when passing and keep safe distances. Clear communication prevents surprises for both riders and horses.
